The Dufferin Islands are just up the road from the Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls. It is a sanctuary for walkers and birds alike and is probably largely unknown to most tourists. The walk takes you over a series of bridges and ponds where marsh birds love to hang out. It is truly a hidden gem that is right under your nose if you take the time to look and explore.
….day 4 of Sketchbook Revival with Tamara Laporte
In one of today’s Sketchbook Revival classes we meet Tamara Laporte. I’ve watched some of her classes before but I think this is the first time I’ve completed an assignment. It was a lot of fun and I think I may go back to her site and try some more.
This owl was first sketched with pencil and then watercolour was applied. Along the way marker, ink, pencil and acrylic paint pens were used to add detail.

As I was walking through High Park last week I notice a couple of people intently looking up through the trees. I was looking a for short cut back to my car so I headed in their direction. When I got closer I looked up and I could see a beautiful Red Tail Hawk with his back to us. Here was a moment when I wished I had my telephoto lens with me but I had use my iPhone and hope for the best.
I wanted to get a shot from the front but when I stepped on a twig and snapped it the hawk flew away. He didn’t go far so we followed him to the next tree, a couple of times. I tried to walk without making too much noise but it is almost impossible this time of year with all the debris that lies on the hard ground.
I knew that If I waited longed enough I might be able to get a shot of him taking off for the next tree.
It pays to be patient.

Emus are flightless birds and second in size only to the ostrich. This large bird originates from Australia and forages on seeds and plants. My photos are from the High Park Zoo where two of these magnificent birds reside.
