Back to the Cottage

packing to go to the cottage for the rest of the week

I’m trying to gather a bunch of posts ahead of time and schedule the days you’ll see them. For challenges I’ll give credit to the hosts but you may have to search their blogs to find the most recent posts. I can’t do this at the cottage because I don’t have electricity or the internet.

For those of you who are doing Thursday Trios I will reply to your posts when I return on the weekend. Hoping to get lots of reading and painting done on this trip. See you soon.

First Ice-cream of the Summer

…on Tuesday this week when we had the hottest day of the summer so far

On Tuesday I decided to drive through High Park and stop and take some photos of the flowers. The flowers were a bit disappointing. I think the gardeners were more focused on the Gypsy Moths that were defoliating much of the trees in the park. I’m happy to report that the mess on the roads that my husband experienced the week before had been resolved and the only evidence that there had been a problem was the sparse canopy in the wooded areas. Normally this time of year the trees are very lush and full but this year the caterpillars had quite a feast and there was a lot of light coming through the trees.

I quickly realized that the heat was going to be a problem but then I noticed that the ice-cream vendor was open and I decided to purchase my first ice-cream of the season.

I enjoyed my treat in a nice shady area but I soon realized once I started walking that ice-cream on a hot day doesn’t necessarily cool you down and it actually makes you more thirsty.

Our First Walk on the Beach

last week my daughter, daughter-in-law and I drove up to Christian Island to open up our cottage for the season

We lucked out with the weather. It only rained at night and the hot blistering temperatures from the west haven’t yet arrived this far east. After spending the evening cleaning the inside of the cottage (sweeping out the mouse poop, airing out the cushions, setting up the fridge, making up the beds, and putting away the food) we decided to explore the beach the next morning.

Luckily we have a beach again. The water levels have receded and the numerous trees that had started to grow on the beach have disappeared.

Well, Hello There!

….sometimes I get to see some unexpected wildlife on my walks

This week the ducklings were playing near the water’s edge with Mom and Dad close behind.

On my way back home as I turned the bend in the road there in the middle of the path stood this lovely rabbit. He stood perfectly still. I think he thought if he didn’t move I wouldn’t notice him but when I stepped closer he hopped off quickly into the tall grass.

Water, Water Everywhere – June 27, 2021

thanks to Jez for hosting Water, Water Everywhere https://jezbraithwaite.blog/2021/06/28/reflections-11-water-water-everywhere-85/

I never tire of walking through Col. Sam Smith Park and now that summer is officially here the paths and walkways are particularly busy with walkers, runners and cyclists. Sometimes I like to veer off onto the many beaches throughout the park and find a log to sit on and just enjoy the shoreline.

Six on Saturday – June 26, 2021

thanks to the Propagator for hosting Six on Saturday https://thepropagatorblog.wordpress.com/2021/06/26/six-on-saturday-26-06-2021/

There wasn’t much need for watering the garden on Saturday. We’ve had quite a bit of rain and the forecast for the the next seven days is calling for rain pretty much every day.

I spent most of my time dead heading some of the flowers and pulling weeds.

I was delighted to see that the tiger lilies that Dad planted last spring have returned and are now in full bloom.

In the raised beds the lettuce and the kale are thriving but none of the bean seeds or sweet pea seeds sprouted. I’m beginning to think that the deluxe triple mix that I added to the beds was far from deluxe.

I’m happy to see that the tomato plants and the peppers are also thriving in the their containers and that the raspberry canes are starting to produce some fruit. I hope we can enjoy some of the berries before the birds and squirrels feast on them.

Thursday Trios – Another Special Delivery

I love receiving parcels at the door

Last week I had a trio of wine arrive at the house for a special wine tasting Zoom meeting. Last night my husband and I enjoyed a bit of all three wines paired with cheeses and the special jellies that were also sent with the wine. There were close to 50 participants and both my husband and I were glad that the meeting was muted until the end if you wanted to ask questions. Being muted allowed us to be less self conscious and say whatever we wanted to each other. Even my husband had to admit that it was fun.

Tonight I signed up for another Zoom meeting (also organized by Alumni Week for the University of Guelph) but this time it is for a craft beer tasting. Not sure how this one will work because I can’t imagine tasting all six beers in one sitting. We’ll see how it goes.

I love the labels and the original names on Craft beer cans.

Do any beers pictured here pique your curiosity? Experimental Farm Ale has my attention.

A trio of rosebuds to round out my Thursday Trio post.

Do you have any photos of trios? I’d love to see them. Just copy the link from this post and paste it into your post and I will get a pingback. Have fun!
