September usually signals that summer is quickly coming to an end. During the day, however, the temperatures can still be blisteringly hot but the cooler breezes in the evening off the lake, the shorter days, pots of mums at the garden centres and children skipping off to school in the mornings clearly forecast that autumn is close at hand.
Summer’s end brings out the sweaters and sweatshirts for evening walks. Fewer people are playing at the lawn bowling club and for those who still come out the lights have to be turned on over the pitch so the bowlers aren’t playing in the dark. In the garden most of the vegetables have come to an end. The kale of course will continue to thrive well into late fall but the green tomatoes struggle to ripen on the vine. The leaves on the trees and shrubs are beginning turn colour and some have started to fall to the ground. The bees and the squirrels are busily stocking up their food stores and fattening up for winter.
Have you ever ordered soil for the garden and then later in the season when nothing is growing you wonder what on earth you were sent. I even gave some of that bag of soil away to the neighbours because it was more than I needed and they discovered the same problem. The soil became hard and clumpy and very little grew where it had been placed. I’ll never order from that garden centre again. They just ignored my complaint.

Summer for me is the cottage. With preparing for the my solo art show, hanging the show, attending the gallery to greet people and now closing the show I have yet to get to my summer home. There have been other issues as well, such as not being able to get to the island because the the ferry broke down, was repaired and then broke down again. Even though the passenger ferry is running and a barge was provided I couldn’t bring myself to open the cottage on my own. This coming weekend, my daughter and daughter-in-law are able to help me. In the meantime I’ve enjoyed ‘Summer’ from the city.
As many of you know I live down by Lake Ontario and am blessed with a string of beautiful parks in my neighbourhood. Here is summer so far, this year, for me.

I love seeing photos of people going about their normal day but I’ve always been intimidated about taking photos of strangers on the street. On the weekend when I was taking my camera for a walk I discreetly took shots of people enjoying the sunny and warm day.
It didn’t look like I was going to get a walk in today but the rain was short lived. When the showers subsided I decided to take a quick stroll along some of the streets in my neighbourhood. The gardens are really starting to come together and the colours are wonderful. I’ve noticed that there is a campaign against hate and some lawns have signs denouncing hate and a number of windows have neon hearts prominently displayed where passersby can see them.
Despite the chilly winds, especially when the clouds pass over the sun, it was a beautiful morning for a walk and taking photos. I love the colour of the sky on mornings like this and how it reflects onto the water. Let me take you on my walk through my photos.
