Saturday Sculpture – Someone Was Very Busy This Week

….thanks to Susan Kelly from No Fixed Plans for hosting Saturday Sculpture https://nofixedplans5.wordpress.com/2021/05/15/sculpture-saturday-31/

I try to get out and walk every day and at least once a week I walk over to Col. Sam Smith Park where there are these wonderful rocky beaches where one can see the city skyline of Toronto off in the distance. Over the years people have played with the rocks and bricks and created interesting sculptures and installation art on these rocky shore. They stay up for awhile and then they usually disappear.

Yesterday I observed not one or two of these rock sculpture but literally dozens of them that were not there last week. Some were very tall and others shorter and some were decorated with coloured rice but each one was different.

Making Books With Ugly Colours

lesson 8 with Carla Sonheim

Imagine combining colours that you don’t necessarily like and creating a piece of art with it. That was the assignment from Carla in her Year Long Class 2021.

To add another element of interest we were to use old pieces of art that we no longer liked and cut it up into rectangles. On the unpainted side we added four colours that we don’t normally use or just dislike. I’m not much of a purple person so I used dark purple, dark green, bright pink and pale pink. Here’s what the original side looked like and then you’ll see the newly painted side with ‘ugly’ colours. I’m sure some of you won’t consider these colour ugly and I have to admit that they did grow on me.

Once the paint dried, each rectangle was cut in half and each half with folded in half. Then the pieces were all stacked together to create a small book and I sewed the pages together with book binding thread. This process created two books.

In the first book I added collage, stickers, marks in black and white ink and I wrote words. Here is the first book I created.

I Immediately Saw a Pig

….after laying down random splashes of watercolour

Once I saw the pig I couldn’t get him out of my mind so I knew that I had to include him in my next intuitive art piece. After I drew the pig I started to see other animals and of course more flowers appeared.

Looking for Shapes in Splashes of Colour

Pam Garrison was a guest artist recently on Carla Sonheim’s Year Long Class and treated us to a lesson using random splashes of watercolour to create an art piece. Once the paint dried we had to look for shapes and bring them out with outlines of black ink.

In this piece I saw mostly flowers and some birds.

Sunday Stills – Celebrating National Pets and Kids Day

….not sure if this is strictly an American thing but thanks to Terri Webster Schrandt for hosting Sunday Stills https://secondwindleisure.com/2021/04/25/sunday-stills-celebrating-pets-and-kids/

After doing a little research I did discover that today, April 26th is recognized as National Pets and Kids Day in the U.S. It is intended to raise awareness of the importance of picking the right pet for children at the right time. It’s an important decision that can lead to a lifetime of bonding between pet and child.

We have been pet owners for over 30 years. Our first pet, other than gold fish, was a golden retriever followed by a second golden. They were great dogs to have around children. When the kids grew up we adopted a mutt who instantly became my husband’s dog. Our daughters both became dog owners when they set up their own homes and our son who has moved about Europe for the last 15 years is sans a pet.
