View From My Window

….on Tuesday there were still quite a few leaves left on the trees

Since Tuesday we’ve had high winds and a fair bit of rain. I was sure that most of the leaves would be gone within a day or two but there are surprisingly some very stubborn trees in the neighbourhood that are still showing off some beautiful colours.

Today was another windy, cold and wet day. From my window I could see that there are definitely fewer leaves and there were some serious white caps on the lake.

On Tuesday

Signs That Autumn is Definitely Here

….for weeks I’ve been complaining that the colours aren’t changing

Well I finally got my wish but the cold and rain are starting to get me down. I guess without the cooler temperatures we wouldn’t get these beautiful colours. Enjoy!fullsizeoutput-749a

Thursday Doors – Sept.27, 2018

….thanks to Jolene for hosting Thursday Doors this week

After dropping my father off at Union Station this morning I went outside the train station to snap a few shots. The doors are from Union Station and the Royal York Hotel which is right across the street (first place where my Dad took a job when he first arrived in Canada in 1954).

My dad loves to tell the story of how he got off the train at Union Station and asked someone where he could get a job as a waiter. It was his first day in Canada. They pointed across the street and told him that the Royal York Hotel was the largest hotel in Toronto. He walked over, introduced himself and they hired him on the spot.

A Photo a Week Challenge – Water

…thanks to Nancy Merrill for hosting A Photo a Week Challenge

Water…..where do I begin?  I live next to a huge body of water, Lake Ontario and I spend much of my summer at the cottage next to Georgian Bay. I literally have thousands of photos of water. Here is one of my more recent ones.fullsizeoutput_6fc9

An Old Fashion Corn Roast

As some of you know I’ve taken up bread baking at Montgomery’s Inn here in the west end of Toronto. The inn is an historical site and museum and depends on the generosity of time given by numerous volunteers. Every year the inn hosts a community corn roast.

This was the first one I’ve ever attended and I was there as a volunteer. I helped roast the corn in the outdoor wood fired oven that we use for our bread baking every week. In the kitchen the volunteers cooked the sausages and more volunteers manned the tables where tickets were sold, food distributed and where coffee and tea were served. Down the hill there was an activity area for the children and under the tent there was live entertainment.IMG_4121

On the other side of the building several historical organizations set up booths to display information about their group and quite a few people were dressed in period costumes. Later in the evening the ukulele class that performs the first Thursday of every month also gave an impromptu performance for the community in attendance. I’ve been playing with the group off and on since January and I was happy to be there again after a bit of an absence. When you haven’t played for awhile three hours of singing and playing  can be hard on the fingers but wonderful for the soul.IMG_4122
