Starting With a Blob

….when you don’t know what to paint start with a blob of colour

Today was the first day of Sketchbook Revival, another on-line free series of classes to get your creative juices to flow. The program is hosted by Karen Abend and today’s guest artist is one of my favourite teachers, Carla Sonheim.

Carla started by encouraging all artists to journal daily with what she calls box journalling. Basically she draws a box in her journal and divides it into sections and writes and draws in the different spaces. She writes random thoughts, to do and idea lists and draws doodles in one of the smaller squares. All of these help give her inspiration for the rest of her day. She also finds it very meditative.

Blob drawings are a great way to start making art when you’re in a rut and don’t know what you want to paint. You literally lay down a blob of paint onto paper and smear it or spread it in a random fashion with a credit card or palette knife. Here are two examples of blobs that I have laid down on the pages of my sketchbook.

Later this evening I will probably turn then around and see what animal or creature I see and start adding detail with a black marker or with ink. For the one that I just finished I used a water based ink so that I could go back in with a wet brush and add shading by just going over the black lines.

In my first blob I clearly saw a bird flying through the air. Here is my finished piece.

Tea Biscuits and Doodles

….trying to keep busy and watch less TV

My husband finally got bored watching TV and felt well enough to play in the kitchen. For some reason he’s had a craving for tea biscuits so he started to research for a recipe where we had all the ingredients. I haven’t made biscuits in a long time but I do remember that they were pretty basic with simple ingredients. It’s amazing how many variations of tea biscuits there are out there. Some called for evaporated milk and lemon soda pop and of course there are all kinds of add ons like raisin and cranberries.

We finally decided on a classic recipe. My husband also made his own clotted cream and we had a wonderful afternoon tea break with hot biscuits and cream. The only thing missing were the fresh berries to go on top.11-B17042-A48-F-4028-ABAF-7-E15-D9-BEE793

Later in the evening I went on the internet and found a new site hosted by Mo Willems, the children’s book author and illustrator. It is very much geared to children but I enjoyed his show ‘Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems”. Check it out if you like to doodle and/or if you have children who like his books. He demonstrates how to draw Pigeon, Piggy and Elephant.

Getting Back to Art Making

…there are lots of free tutorials on the internet

Sometimes you need to start small to get back into the groove. With Covid-19 and self isolating there is only so much cleaning a person can do. I managed to clear away enough clutter from my art table and I tuned to Sketchbook Skool’s free classes called the Drawing Party.

Today I did the first two classes. It gave me just enough inspiration to get my creative juices flowing. The first lesson focused on laying down shapes of colour and then adding detail with black ink. I pretty much followed Danny’s lead but I can see doing this on my own. For the colour I used my chalk markers and Artist Loft markers. DEDE3645-8788-4-AEB-A479-865-F43-CACA22

The second class was all about slowing down and drawing lots of detail. My subject was a dried up hydrangea.F73523-F5-FCF5-4-BF1-9-E85-BB7-BC767-EBC9

Friendly Friday Photo Challenge – Art Unexpected

…thanks to Sandy for hosting this week’s Friendly Friday Photo Challenge

Some of the best art is the piece that you come across unexpectedly. On my walk last week someone or multiple people had left these painted stones on a rock for all to enjoy.C4-CD0-EBD-D5-C0-4-F19-AB52-7-BF083346-BFC

I also find that when you walk into a setting and new art has been put up that you weren’t expecting it can affect you in one of several ways. This new art display at Montgomery’s Inn gave me instant joy because of its whimsical quality. It clearly affected a lot of people in a similar way because most people pulled out their camera phones and started taking photos of these large ink drawings.25-F5-CEE5-C04-F-4920-A055-54-EEDED3376-F

Day 29 – Sharing Sketchbooks

….day 29 of the 30 Day Creativity Challenge

Thanks Rainee for inspiring me to create for 30 days.

Last Friday I spent the day with our granddaughter again. I brought her a sketchbook just like mine and her own blending stick. This, however, did not keep her from drawing in my book. I saw a picture on the wall of a simple vase with leaves pouring out of the top. I started drawing it. When Winnie saw what I was doing she added more leaves to my picture and started to colour in the vase. 41A34BFA-6E60-40D5-9E8D-2FF3FF131A1C_1_201_a

When she was done with that she turned to a fresh page in my book and drew her own vase with leaves. B99C367B-FF34-46B3-9D82-E539AE2E4162_1_201_a

Here she used her blending stick on the pencil and white charcoal details she added. She asked me to make a speech balloon with the saying ‘I need you’.

New Art Exhibit – Day 27

…thanks to Rainee for hosting the 30 Day Creativity Challenge

As I’ve said before my creative juices flow whenever I take a new class or walk through an art gallery. This week I had some work to do in the library at the Women’s Art Association of Canada and while I was there a group of busy women were installing a new art show called Creative Spirit. Here are a some of the pieces that spoke to me personally.6C0DDFB7-6EE2-4AAE-94EF-EC1DF9CE3B8A_1_201_a4C2FE8D0-D67D-4167-B53E-0A9090526C80_1_201_aB3ABC133-A488-4230-895F-E5936B98E270_1_201_a0251AF1A-98EC-4C53-A6F1-A93CE6206C49_1_201_aB115452E-0F7B-4287-B3AC-D55D1729007B_1_201_aFCE74DB7-9EB6-4E2D-B856-52682EBFA06E_1_201_a1CE6A520-ED11-4D11-9228-DCFD6083B9F8_1_201_a3CE3810B-02C2-4348-BFC3-4239AD887629_1_201_a

Days 24, 25 and 26 of the Creativity Challenge

…thanks to Rainee for introducing me to the 30 Day Creativity Challenge

I’m continuing to do a page a day in my sketchbook using words and drawing of things around me. The thing I’m not very good at is posting my work on a daily basis.091391EE-1FE0-49CF-9316-26F326FE2FDE_1_201_a3FC96E68-1385-4671-BFD0-E1ED73A5E1AC_1_201_a

One of the places where I’m getting my inspiration for these drawings is from children’s picture books. On day 26 I went to visit my granddaughter in Hamilton and I brought my sketchbook along. One of things I let her do is draw in my book.

We were going through one of her favourite books where she can make faces using the stickers from the back of the book. The faces are taken from all kinds of objects like fruit, vegetables, leaves, acorns, dishes, toys, etc.. One of the faces I enjoyed from the book was the leaf so I drew one in my sketchbook. Winnie chose a geometric pattern that she tried to replicate on the next page to mine.

We enjoyed making dialogue balloons and making up things that the object might say. I went from a leaf to acorns and the page started to come together. Winnie enjoyed the process so much that she wanted me to redraw some of the shapes on a clean page so that she could add her own details using a pencil and blending stick. The blending stick was new to her and she loved the effects of smudging her lines to create shadows (her words). Here are results of our time together.28F4F5F3-8B68-4B63-AF17-BEAE5C1D2BEC48D49571-01DA-4A55-9FFE-AD0E9404C2815DDE9588-FB21-4992-82F5-20AC8172E88047E1F2EC-A267-4C5E-B0CF-4856E0261256
