365 Days of Art – Collage Challenge

…..day 62 and 63 and week 11 and 12

I’m a little behind with the collage challenge that Evelyn Flint started so I’ve done two weeks back to back. The first one was a numbers challenge. Randel Plowman who wrote The Collage Workbook instructed his readers to create a collage with numbers, either spelled out or in numeric form.

For Week 12 the theme is typography. This collage was created using letters and type from a variety of sources.

Week 13 should prove to be interesting. It’s called Secret Message. Stay tuned for more collages.

My Last March Square – March 31st

…..thanks to Becky B for hosting this fun challenge

I’m combining my collage challenge (week 10) and 365 Days of Art (Day 62) with my last March square. This collage technique is called décollage and it involves layering paper and then tearing away the top layer to reveal what’s underneath.

I Guess I Didn’t Win

….but just being able to admire all the beautiful work made me a winner

What am I talking about? Well a week ago I went to Neilson Park Creative Centre in Etobicoke (close to where I live) to take in the annual quilting show. At one end of the hall there was a table of prizes consisting of quilted items that had been donated by the members of the quilters’ guild. I purchased 10 tickets and chose where I wanted my tickets to go. Seeing that I haven’t received a phone call I can only assume that none of my tickets were pulled. Oh well, it doesn’t matter because I went there to see the beautiful hand and machine quilted blankets, coverlets, table runners and wall hangings. Here are a few selections that I managed to photograph.

March Square – Gift from a Student

…..thanks to Becky B for hosting March Square

Only one more day of March Squares. I’ve loved this challenge and don’t know what I’ll do in April. Maybe more art projects? Every day when I wake up I’m greeted with this lovely piece of art that was made by one of my grade three students and gifted to me on my retirement. Thank you Alex.

365 Days of Art – Seuss-like Little Girl

…..day 61

I’ve started trying to create my own Seuss-like characters and started with trying to create a little girl around my granddaughter’s age. My husband thinks our granddaughter is too photogenic to be made into a cartoon figure. I have an idea of creating a scene where the little girl is holding a gigantic Easter egg while a giant rabbit looks down on her. Here are the first three sketches of the little girl.

March Square – A Circle Within a Square

….thanks to Becky B for hosting March Square

It’s amazing how a medallion like this can dress up the dreariest of fences. It certainly caught my eye as I was walking home from the library. IMG_1274

365 Days of Art – Day 58

…..planning on creating a Dr. Seuss like character

For one of my year long assignments with Carla Sonheim I’m suppose to come up with my own Dr. Seuss like character. I decided to study some of Dr. Seuss’ illustrations and see what common characteristics they have. One is the u shape inside the large oval eyes that he uses for most of his characters. The mouth line is just a simple curve ending with a curved cheek line. Here are two practice drawings that I copied from his book What Pet Should I Get?

365 Days of Art – Day 57

Complicated Colour Fields – Part 2

A couple of weeks ago I showed you a project that I started with Carla Sonheim called Complicated Colour Fields – Part 1. You can see what I made here.

The following week I had to cover the entire piece with different bands of acrylic colour and then sand away some of the paint, once it dried, to bring back some of the designs from below. I did that but very little of the original patterns showed through. I decided to share it with you because this is called 365 Days of Art, not 365 Days of Great Art. Some days you won’t get what you hoped for and sometimes it’s more than you hoped for.

For me these two pieces were a bit of a disappointment but I can see using them either has a backdrop for another art project or cut up or torn up for a collage piece. Do you have any suggestions for me?
