Still Enjoying the Bounty from the Garden
….can’t get over the beans….they just keep producing more
I’m pretty sure that we’re done with the beans now but I see lots of cherry tomatoes still on the vines and the beans that didn’t get picked early enough are now providing a lot of seeds for next years garden. Even the pumpkin plant has a couple more small pumpkins on the vine. The three that I picked should make some nice soup and one is definitely going to Winnie when I see her this week (or at least when I see her mother).
Butterfly Surprise
…have you ever seen a tagged butterfly?
I love getting up close to bees and butterflies but when I saw this monarch I thought someone had played a cruel trick.

An Evening Walk on the Beach
…after arriving at the cottage we had a quick snack and then decided to explore the beach
Now that the days are getting shorter my daughter and I knew that we didn’t have a lot of time to walk on the beach before darkness set in. After sitting in the car for over three hours we needed to stretch our legs. We fuelled up on some tea and homemade apple cake and then headed down to the beach. We were pleasantly surprised to find the the water level had gone down somewhat since our last visit so walking on the beach was considerably easier than it was two weeks ago.

My morning ritual changes depending on the time of year and where I am. The one constant, though, is my morning coffee.
It’s Beginning to Change
….not just the temperature and the amount of daylight hours
Last week I spent four days at the cottage. It was only my third visit of the season and next week I’ll do one more visit and close up for the winter. It’s been a strange cottage season for the lessees on Christian Island but I’ve enjoyed it non the less.
Even walking through the woods was prohibited but we were allowed to venture to the beach and up and down our lanes. I’m beginning to notice the signs that autumn and winter are on their way. When the winds start up the acorns land hard on our metal roof and make a loud bang. There’s not a lot of change in colour yet but there are signs everywhere that it won’t be long now.
Success in the Vegetable Patch
….we’re pretty good at growing beans, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, radishes and herbs
This year we’ve added red peppers and pumpkins to our list of successful crops.
Gone Fishing!
…not really
I’ll be at the cottage for a few days so you won’t see any new posts after tomorrow until Saturday or Sunday. As many of you know I have no internet or electricity. Hopefully we’ll have some nice days but regardless it always nice to get away.
Here is a recent photo of our granddaughter catching her first fish. The photo was taken by her Mom. Boy do I miss these guys.
My Birthday Week

Last Friday I celebrated my birthday with my husband. My kids live all over the place so we planned to celebrate on different days. The day before my birthday my son called me from London, England and we had a fun conversation with Sevin in the forefront. I love video calls because we were actually able to interact with our granddaughter, who is already seven months old. She was so engaged with what she saw on the phone. I remember Winnie was the same way at that age.
She also surprised everyone that same day because she started crawling.
On my birthday, my husband took me out for dinner. We tried to get into Snug Harbour again but once again the wait was over an hour. We walked up the street to Posta and enjoyed a lovely meal outside on the patio.
The next day on Saturday we planned to get together with Andrea, Josie, my Dad and my dear friend Arlene. Arlene and I have know each other since 1976. She was my first teacher friend but she’s more like family. She’s godmother to my children and she loves being called Aunt Beanie. This was the first time since February that we’ve seen each other. We’re all at that vulnerable age and some of us have compromised immune systems. COVID has kept us apart all this time. We feasted on a Japanese lunch in the backyard. Later in the afternoon another friend from across the road came over to share a glass of wine with us.
When it was time for birthday cake, it was extremely windy but then my daughter reminded us that during COVID it probably wasn’t a good idea to blow out candles over the cake. Instead she lit one candle and held it up to me to blow it out. Ah the things we do in the name of safety.
Our youngest daughter is still up at the children’s camp at Sparrow Lake (no children this year, just maintenance workers). I did get a phone call from her and also one from my sister in Calgary. Hopefully sometime next week we’ll be able to get together with daughter number two and her family and the celebration will continue. I love birthdays that continue for days and sometimes weeks.

I’m always near water. At home I have Lake Ontario 100m from my house and at the cottage I live by Georgian Bay. This is the view from the park at the bottom of my street in Toronto. I never get tired of seeing this skyline.
