The Joy of Cooking and Baking in my New Kitchen

…with more storage and counter space

I’m still putting away supplies, dishes and accessories from our old kitchen but much of it was given away, donated to a thrift shop or thrown away. We have a second kitchen in the basement and some of the supplies that we don’t use every day will stay down there until we need them.

On Sunday I had an itch to cook and bake. As many of you know, my husband does most of the cooking in this house. He gets so much pleasure working in the kitchen and now in his new space his pleasure has doubled.

I love making soup and made a large pot of chicken vegetable soup. While the soup simmered I made a batch of lemon cranberry muffins. When I was gathering up supplies for the kitchen I came across a recipe that my sister, Chris, typed up for me awhile ago.

Both recipes were delicious and we enjoyed them for the next three days and there is still enough soup left over for another meal.

Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend

last weekend we celebrated our Thanksgiving with family and friends

On Saturday Kevin and I drove north to our daughters’ cottage where we enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner. Twelve of us sat around the table and consumed dishes that everyone shared in preparing. Of course there was more food than a person would normally consume in one sitting and the tryptophan from the turkey made us all sleepy.

To work off the meal half of us took a walk.

We stayed overnight and left around noon. It was a gorgeous autumn day and we decided to explore some of the farms in the neighbourhood.

We discovered Georgian Roots Flower Farm that is very close to our cottage on Christian Island. Andrea and Josie had heard about this place so we decided to check it out. It was established in 2018 as a cut flower farm.

After purchasing a bouquet of flowers to take home we continued with our autumn road trip. There were lots of pumpkins for sale along the roadside but we decided to stop at Harris Farm. It was very busy and clearly very popular with families. A new addition to the farm was a corn maze and the kids really seemed to enjoy it.

With an extra large pumpkin for carving and a few smaller ones for decorating we continued on our trip home. It was a perfect weekend.

October So Far….Dog Sitting, Concert at Massey Hall, Family Wedding and a Trip to Hamilton

It’s been a busy month and we’re only 1/3 of the way through.

Our daughter and daughter-in-law took a trip to Berlin, Germany where Andrea participated in the Berlin Marathon. While they were away we dog sat, Olive. For a dog who doesn’t like to walk we got in quite a few long walks in the neighbourhood.

The day after Andrea and Josie returned from Germany we all went to my nephew’s wedding. My sister and her family travelled from Calgary to be here so it was a bit of a family reunion. Unfortunately our son in London and our daughter in New Brunswick couldn’t join us.

The wedding was beautiful and so much fun. Rose and Patrick were very happy.

Earlier in the week, before the wedding Kevin and I attended the Herbie Hancock concert at Massey Hall. Herbie is 84 years young but jumped on the stage like a 20 year old. What a fantastic concert.

On Friday, Oct. 11 we drove to Hamilton to attend a cross country race hosted by McMaster University. After the race we drove back to the area where our youngest daughter used to live and had a coffee at our favourite cafe. We lucked out and took in the Art Crawl,

Monday Murals – Street Art in Guelph

walking through the back alleys

Last week Kevin and I drove to Guelph and after parking away from the main street we looked for a short cut to get back to the stores we wanted to explore. We ended up walking through back alleyways and parking lots and discovered a wonderful display of street art.

On a recent trip to Guelph we made a stop at a music store. Kevin loves guitars and loves to check out the guitar section. This wall had 14 (7×2) electric guitars.

Last week my husband and I went to an opening of a show to remember and enjoy the works of the late Canadian artist Tom Hodgson. We thoroughly enjoyed the show and appreciated the seating where one could enjoy the art in comfort.
