Once again I went back to one of my sketchbooks and added colour to one of my one-line drawings of cats and I added some collage detail. For the collage I spent some time creating some colourful art papers with oil pastels and then cut out droplet shapes. On the blank page in front of the cats I created collage piece using this paper.

I love colour but this isn’t as easy as it appears. I think I have a tendency to overthink and overwork my colours. In the end I added charcoal lines and shapes and I liked it much better.

I enjoyed playing with my inks but I felt that I didn’t get the same kind of depth that charcoal gives.

I’m redoing a class in abstract painting with Karine Swenson. Our first assignment was to create these abstract studies in charcoal.

Over the last two days I’ve gone back to my 500 Daily Drawing Prompts journal to create two more sketches. The first one I did was the spooky tree which was fun to do but I feel like I relied too heavily on an image I found on Google. The second sketch, the mythical beast, was my own creation. I did search the web for some ideas and came up with this flying serpent.

A couple of days ago I was watching a video on YouTube on how complementary colours ‘vibrate’ when placed next to each other. Jean Lurssen does a series of watercolour videos with exercises that help the painter loosen up and experiment with a number of different techniques. Check her out.

Not everything that I paint or draw will be pretty. In this piece I finally got back to playing with ink and watercolour and experimenting with how they interact. You can see that I got a little carried away but I wanted you to see that I haven’t given up on my personal art challenge.

Two things that I have lots of in this house are books and paper.

1917 is often referred to as the worst year in Canadian history. In that year we saw the highest casualty figures for Canada during WWI. The death toll at Vimy Ridge alone was 3598 with another 7000 injured.
The city of Halifax was destroyed when two ships collided in Halifax Harbour, killing 1900 civilians and injuring 9000 in a town of 50 000. It was the worst man-made destruction of a city until 1945.
The conscription policy divided the country in one of the most bitter elections ever in 1917 but on the upside some women were granted the right to vote if they had a husband, father or brother who served in the war.
It was also the year that the Nation Hockey League (NHL) was established but not until an American team won the Stanley Cup for the first time earlier in the year. Tom Thomson, a famous Canadian artist, also died that year under mysterious circumstances.
Today I went to Montgomery’s Inn to sign up as a volunteer. While I was there I happened upon a wonderful art display of paintings depicting what happened in Canada in 1917.
…..one real, one garden variety and one drawn
I came across the real bunny this week on one of my walks. It was one of those moments when I wished I had brought my good camera with the zoom lens. The second bunny is a ceramic garden figure and the third bunny is a drawing that my husband drew for our granddaughter.
