During the long Thanksgiving Weekend we got ahead of the traffic by going home on Sunday instead of Monday. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the drive through the countryside by avoiding the major highways.

Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend

last weekend we celebrated our Thanksgiving with family and friends

On Saturday Kevin and I drove north to our daughters’ cottage where we enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner. Twelve of us sat around the table and consumed dishes that everyone shared in preparing. Of course there was more food than a person would normally consume in one sitting and the tryptophan from the turkey made us all sleepy.

To work off the meal half of us took a walk.

We stayed overnight and left around noon. It was a gorgeous autumn day and we decided to explore some of the farms in the neighbourhood.

We discovered Georgian Roots Flower Farm that is very close to our cottage on Christian Island. Andrea and Josie had heard about this place so we decided to check it out. It was established in 2018 as a cut flower farm.

After purchasing a bouquet of flowers to take home we continued with our autumn road trip. There were lots of pumpkins for sale along the roadside but we decided to stop at Harris Farm. It was very busy and clearly very popular with families. A new addition to the farm was a corn maze and the kids really seemed to enjoy it.

With an extra large pumpkin for carving and a few smaller ones for decorating we continued on our trip home. It was a perfect weekend.

October So Far….Dog Sitting, Concert at Massey Hall, Family Wedding and a Trip to Hamilton

It’s been a busy month and we’re only 1/3 of the way through.

Our daughter and daughter-in-law took a trip to Berlin, Germany where Andrea participated in the Berlin Marathon. While they were away we dog sat, Olive. For a dog who doesn’t like to walk we got in quite a few long walks in the neighbourhood.

The day after Andrea and Josie returned from Germany we all went to my nephew’s wedding. My sister and her family travelled from Calgary to be here so it was a bit of a family reunion. Unfortunately our son in London and our daughter in New Brunswick couldn’t join us.

The wedding was beautiful and so much fun. Rose and Patrick were very happy.

Earlier in the week, before the wedding Kevin and I attended the Herbie Hancock concert at Massey Hall. Herbie is 84 years young but jumped on the stage like a 20 year old. What a fantastic concert.

On Friday, Oct. 11 we drove to Hamilton to attend a cross country race hosted by McMaster University. After the race we drove back to the area where our youngest daughter used to live and had a coffee at our favourite cafe. We lucked out and took in the Art Crawl,

Thursday Trios – Handmade Trios

from the Hamilton Art Crawl

Once a month, on a Friday, Hamilton hosts an outdoor Art Crawl. Dozens of vendors set up tables on James Street N selling everything from art to jewellery to handmade crafts.

Closing the Cottage for Another Season

despite the warm and sunny weather

I brought home all the bedding to wash and the canned and bottled food. There is no heat in the winter so any food left behind would freeze and cause the bottles and tins to explode. All the clean bedding, pillows and paper products age packed in sealed containers or bags so that any mice that might find their way into the cottage don’t chew them up for their nests. Luckily in the last few years there has been little evidence that mice moved in.

It’s very difficult closing the cottage in September. Many believe that this time of year has the best weather. Warm during the day and cooler at night….perfect for sleeping. Normally I wouldn’t close until mid October but this year we have a family wedding to attend and Thanksgiving is going to be at our daughter’s place.

All the outdoor furniture is brought indoors and the propane tanks are turned off and the BBQ is covered and moved closer to the building.

Good-bye Christian Island. See you next year!
