I am a fan of swans and have lots of photos of them in the archives but I decided to go for a walk late this afternoon to see if I could find some close to home. I walked east of the house and stayed close to the edge of the parks looking for these beautiful birds. I one area where I usually see up to a dozen or more was inaccessible because the ramp to the lake was piled high with snow from the ploughs.

I continued further east and finally came across a flock of them about a kilometre or more from the house. Here are my swans in winter on the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto.

In Search of Food

….our presence brought them closer than I expected

Normally the geese and ducks at the pond swim away when I try to get closer to them for a good photo but today they came right up to the water’s edge and reached over as if they were expecting us to feed them. Judging by the number of empty plastic bread bags that were lying around I suspect that’s exactly what they were looking for.

Despite signs posted in the park not to feed the water foul bread the public does it anyway. Bread is not a natural food source for ducks, geese and swans and I’m sure that a diet with too much gluten is harmful for these beautiful birds.

Hint of Spring in February

…not all of February was cold and snowy

Last weekend we had beautiful weather that brought the walkers, dogs and photographers out in droves. I think people knew that more snow and colder temperatures were on their way so they took advantage of the cleared paths, sun and warmer climes.

Smartphone Photo Challenge – Week 9 – Mood

The mood here is serene and calm. I tried to capture the warmth of the setting sun even though the temperatures were hovering around freezing. I added more saturation and vibrance to this photo.

For this one I added more contrast and vibrance. This intensified the colour of the water and helped to make the foreground and swan stand out more. Capturing the swan between the branches gives this photo a bit of a mysterious mood.
