..created by Canadian artist Derek Michael Besant
The mural, “trompe l’oeil”, is on the back of the Gooderham Building or more commonly known as the Flatiron Building. It appears to be a canvas screwed onto the façade with the edges of the canvas fluttering in the wind.
The Gooderham Building, is located on the wedge shaped corner of Wellington East, Front, and Scott Streets and was built in 1891. It was owned by George Gooderham who owned numerous properties throughout the city, including the Gooderham Distillery. He was one of the richest men in Canada and yet was relatively unknown.

….in a downtown Toronto park
Last week I attended a luncheon for the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto at a popular restaurant close to Union Station. I took the Go Train ( a short trip from the station close to my house) and I walked to the restaurant which was only a couple of blocks away. As I approached the Flatiron Building I noticed that the park behind it has been decorated for Christmas. Berczy Park was redesigned by Claude Cormier ( no relation) in 2015 and features a fountain with 27 dogs looking up to the top where a bone is perched. There is also one cat facing north looking at a couple of birds. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berczy_Park

Blue is often related to the feeling of being depressed or sad but it is also a colour that is very relaxing and soothing and if you ask people what their favourite colour is, it is most often blue. People always tell me that blue is my colour because it brings out the blue from my blule green eyes but it has to be a very specific blue. A pale blue or denim blue really does nothing for me except wash me out. My best blues are royal blues and bright blues and turquoise blues.
Other than the sky, blue is difficult to find in nature but I did manage to find a flower that was blue.

I’ve seen and passed by this door for years and a few weeks ago I finally went through and saw some amazing and inspiring art.

Did I watch the Coronation last Saturday? I did not. Had I been home I might have tuned in but it happened to fall on the same day as my art opening. I do like the pomp and circumstance, the colours and formal attire but I’m not sure that the monarchy has a place in society anymore. I appreciate the history of the monarchy and even paid Buckingham Palace a visit the first time we travelled to London in 2018. Then again I have visited many castles and palaces in countries where monarchies no longer exist.
The Queen was and now King Charles is the head of state in Canada. It is purely a symbolic title and holds no power. I’m not sure that King Charles will be as popular a monarch as his mother was. Once the shine of his coronation dims, I’m sure the debates about the legitimacy of the monarchy will continue. It would be nice if King Charles could continue his work with global warming and the impact on the environment but I fear that this has become too political and his hands will be tied. Maybe this might have been as area where his monarchy could have make a difference in the world.
For now let the monarchists and supporters of the Royal Family have their day. Who knows, this may be the last Coronation they ever experience.

It was a beautiful sunny day when we decided to check out the Arboretum. I can’t wait to go back when the leaves come out the flowers come up.
