Pull Up a Seat and Enjoy the Art

….thanks to XingFu Mama for hosting https://xingfumama.blog/2022/02/11/pull-up-a-seat-photo-challenge-2022-week-6/

When you go to art galleries there are usually places to sit and really examine the art on the wall. The Women’s Art Association of Canada is no exception. When I was gallery sitting two weeks ago I went around the room and took photos of the interesting chairs in the Dignam Gallery.

Tuesday Textures from the AGO

….I love texture in art pieces

There are two main types of texture in art: physical or actual texture that you can feel or the illusion of texture, created by lines and marks made on the canvas. The photos that I took at the AGO last week have actual textures that you can but probably shouldn’t touch.

Sculpture Saturday – Taking in Art at the AGO Before the Lockdown

last Tuesday, Brendan, Sevin and I decided to go to the AGO

When I booked the tickets I knew that Tuesday would be the last day before another lockdown here in Ontario. Frankly I was quite surprised at how many people had the same idea, especially since it was a Tuesday and many people were back to work, mostly remotely, but none the less there was a bit of a line-up to get in even with timed tickets.

I really wanted to see Picasso’s Blue Period but Sevin was not really into this show so we walked through quickly. Hopefully I can go back when the lockdown is lifted.

One of my favourite areas of the AGO is the Galleria Italia with its floor to ceiling windows and beautiful wooden arched beams. I thought Sevin would enjoy this more and of course she found a seat to sit in right away. Since COVID the cafe in the galleria is closed and the tables have been removed. In its place a number of bronze sculptures are prominently displayed.

Sculpture Saturday – December 4, 2021

On our recent trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake we stopped in at 13th Street Winery to sample some wine and enjoy the art gallery there. Even though the temperatures were chilly, there were fires pits going and people were sitting around them in comfy chairs to sample the wares of this winery. There’s a bakery attached that has the region’s best butter tarts. We wimped out and sampled our wine indoors.

After purchasing wine for Christmas and putting together a gift box of wine and goodies for a very special couple we headed over to the art gallery. On our way we passed several beautiful and interesting sculptures.

A Festive Opening for the Small Gems Show

….Saturday, November 20, 2021

What an exciting day! The Small Gems Show opened and the turnout was amazing. It was so nice to see the gallery full of people (all vaccinated and wearing masks) and the art work was spectacular. Here are a few images from the show.

Crosswords: What Did You Do During COVID?

….Margaret Rodgers used her love of crosswords as her subject for her art show at the Ruth Upjohn Gallery, Women’s Art Association of Canada

Using paint and collage Margaret created these beautiful works of art to highlight a very common activity that probably saw an uptick in popularity in the last two years.

I also found the use of words very interesting. I don’t know if she was purposely trying to make a political statement but words like power, vote, elect, money, power, mock, jokers, and autocrat leads me to think that this might be the case. We also just recently had a federal election. The longer I look at these pieces I see more interesting themes.

If you’re in Toronto, the show is on for one more day. The last day is Tuesday, November 16.

Photographing Public Art Challenge – #18

….thanks to Marsha for hosting PPAC https://alwayswrite.blog/2021/10/15/ppac-18-rusty-public-art-along-az-highways/

I know that Marsha expects the art we post to be outside but I figure if the gallery is open to the public and is free to the public then maybe it’s okay to post under this challenge. Back in September the Women’s Art Association of Canada hosted a show for new member like me to display their work.

One of the pieces that impressed me was an installation piece that had to be assembled and then disassembled at the end of the show. The artist took pieces of her grandmother’s couch and other items from her home to create this piece.

Textures in Art

….for Tuesday Textures

Another great display from the McMichael Gallery.

Jon Sasaki: Homage is a suite of photographs depicting petri dishes with bloomed bacterial cultures derived from swabs of the palettes and easels used by members of the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson, objects held in the archives of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

Lines in Art – October Square

….thanks to Becky B for hosting https://beckybofwinchester.com/2021/10/06/past-squares-6/

This month Becky is opening up October Square to any of the themes from the last four years. Today I’m choosing lines. On my recent trip to the McMichael Art Gallery in Kleinburg I was introduced to an artist that is new to me. Her name is Denyse Thomasos (1964–2012). She was a Trinidadian-Canadian artist whose epic paintings incorporate imagery from a range of sources, including Caribbean textiles, historic slave ships, industrial shipyards, graveyards, villages and maximum security prisons.
