I can’t believe that I haven’t made more art this summer. Last Friday Carla’s assignment involved taking a fat marker and drawing an object of our choice using a heavy line, a light or thin line and a quick line. We were to make a 9 or 10 quick drawings and then choose three that we favoured. I decided to draw tea cups. It was easy to do while I was at the cottage.
Now I have to enlarge the three pieces that I chose and do whatever I want with them.

I’ve returned to my 500 Drawing Book Prompts and made two more drawings.

This is day 92 of my 365 Days of Art challenge. In my last posting I told you about Carla Sonheim’s challenge More is More. This is my second attempt at taking a piece of art that I wasn’t thrilled with and adding more paint. For this one I was a bit more whimsical and started to add some funny little character drawings throughout. I sent the finished piece via WhatsApp to my granddaughter and asked her what she saw. Her reply was ‘a bird and a piano’.

Carla Sonheim’s prompt today was to create a design using lines or just doodling. This is just what I needed today. It was fun and relaxing. All three pieces were done in one of my many art journals. The first one took the longest but the other two were done very quickly.
…this will be the last of my Dr. Seuss characters
After today I think I’m ready to create my own Dr. Seuss like character. Not sure what it will look like but I have a better appreciation of what a Seuss like character should look like.

Dr. Seuss often employed long eyelashes with his characters and loved exaggerated features like the feathers on the head of this bird and the long intertwining legs.

For one of my year long assignments with Carla Sonheim I’m suppose to come up with my own Dr. Seuss like character. I decided to study some of Dr. Seuss’ illustrations and see what common characteristics they have. One is the u shape inside the large oval eyes that he uses for most of his characters. The mouth line is just a simple curve ending with a curved cheek line. Here are two practice drawings that I copied from his book What Pet Should I Get?
…..a grade 2/3 art project
For one of my assignments with Carla Sonheim’s 2017 Year Long Class: 365 we were instructed to take a piece of ginger root and draw the shape onto a piece of paper. Then were to take three colours and add detail to the shape to create some kind of fantastic creature. This was so much fun that I gave the same assignment to my grade 2 and grade 3 students. I bought a few pieces of ginger root and photo copied some photos of ginger root that I found on the internet. Here are the samples that I made to demonstrate the procedure to my classes.
The children chose the ginger root shape that they wanted to copy and they were encouraged to put their creature in a setting and give them a name. Here is a sampling of their creations:
….the grade 2s can’t seem to get enough art assignments
After Easter, when some of my students returned from extended holidays the last of the artist portraits were finished and I promised that I would post their work on my blog. So here goes:
For the students who finished earlier I introduced them to to doing line drawings of animals and then filling them into with pencil and erasing parts to highlight light areas, markings and fur or skin texture. I had learned this technique from Carla Sonheim. I like to challenge this class because they are so open to trying new things. I showed them my samples of the elephant drawings I had done using this technique and then I provided them with photos of a variety of animals that they could choose to draw.
We started this last week and it was suppose to be a filler activity for those students who had finished all their work but at the end of this week’s class almost every student had made at least one of these drawings. Can you tell that Easter just passed when these were finished?
….. I didn’t do much else but I did fill up one sketch book and am pretty close to filling a second one
Please don’t think that I filled up two new sketchbooks. My goal is to go back to older books and fill in the empty pages. The first book that I filled up was a small book to begin with and had only 8 pages left in it. On three of those pages I made journal notes.
In my second sketchbook, I’ve done more doodles, line drawings and portrait sketches.
Even though I’m on holidays my mind is never far from my next lesson at school. Before the break I started teaching the children how to make a simple 3D house out of paper. After folding the paper the children were encouraged to draw windows, doors, lights, numbers and any other details they wanted on their house. The last step is to apply watercolour and add more black line detail. While home I decided to finish the front and two sides of my sample.
So that was pretty much my week. Today we’re going to see the travel agent and book our flights to Italy this summer. So exciting!!!!!!!!
