….it may be spring according to the calendar but winter isn’t done with us just yet
The beginning of March brought so much hope for an early spring but the last few days of March had other ideas. Here are a few of the things I’ve witnessed in the last four weeks.
These photos appear in the order that they were taken.
Last week, the rain cleared away the last bits of snow, the sun warmed up the air and the ground and I even sat on a log by the beach and enjoyed watching the ducks on the lake and the Great Blue Heron on the pond.
…..and then the temperature dropped and we woke up to this on Sunday morning.
It’s still icy cold and this morning more snow fell after I dropped my daughter and her family off at the airport. When they arrived in Moncton, N.B. they were greeted with hail. Ahhhh, winter in Canada. Luckily, we know that spring is just around the corner but we can’t put the boots away just yet.
The snow had completely melted from everyone’s properties, the roads and sidewalks were clear and then this happened. For most of the day the temperatures were hovering just above freezing and even though it had been snowing for hours most of it melted when it hit the ground. Later in the day the temperature dropped to just below freezing and the snow started to stick to everything. There was no wind. Driving home from a shopping trip I felt like I had been transported into a magical winter village. Before going into the house I took a stroll up the street and took a few photos.
…it’s been quite the year for accumulations of snow
After a couple of warmer days much of the snow has melted but there are still snow banks at the edges of peoples driveways and unmelted snow in the parks. We’ve been having this thaw, freeze, thaw cycle of weather for the last month and in between we’ve been getting more snow. For the rest of the week and into next week there are at least four days of snow forecast. Here are some of the days right after a night of gently falling snow.
When we had the big snow storm and over 50cm came down our back deck was impossible to walk on and I couldn’t make my way to the bird feeder so I put seed on a plate and placed it on top of the snow as far away from the door as my arms would reach. I was hoping that the birds would see it and fly onto the plate. In fact, it was the grey squirrel who found the plate first and with some difficulty made his way over the deep snow and had quite the feast.
