Carrying On a Running Tradition
…46 years ago Kevin ran in this race and yesterday our daughter took part at the High Park Spring Run Off Race
Back in the day my husband was an elite runner. When the kids were little we used to bundle them up, strap them into their car seats and drive off to races all over Ontario and New York State. One of the races that was closer to home was the High Park Spring Run Off. When it first started back in 1978 it attracted an impressive 1200 runners and yesterday’s race saw over 5000 men, women and children running in the 8k, 5k and children’s race.
This is not the first year that our daughter, Andrea ran in this race but it was certainly her best performance. She placed 1st in her age category for women. Kevin and I arrived after the race started but we managed to find a prime spot just at the top of the hill so we had a great vantage point for taking photos and caught her just steps in front of the finish line.

RDP Friday – Wonderment

“The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.”
― Albert Einstein
“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
As I take my daily walks with my camera in hand, I’m alway in the state of wonderment with the beauty that surrounds me every day. I’m saddened by the fact that so many people never see what is right in front of their eyes. Many evenings I have run out of the house with my camera in hand to catch a beautiful sunset or quietly stood by my back door to catch the birds and squirrels come to the feeder.

Beartown by Fredrik Backman
…a book that all bookclubs should read
I loved the book Beartown so much that I went on to read the following two books in the series. Beartown is a book that can stand on it’s own but if you love the characters you’ll want to read more. The interesting thing about this book is that it is about a junior hockey team in northern Sweden and not something that I would gravitate to. I’m not a huge hockey fan but I do enjoy watching Olympic hockey.
The story involves flawed characters and a community who get caught up in their devotion to a hockey team. Unlike Backman’s more lovable characters in A Man Called Ove and Anxious People the people of Beartown reflect a more realistic community and how making a bad decision has negative consequences that can ruin people’s lives. Backman has the ability to write thoughtfully and make us feel empathy for his characters. The novel is full of suspense, conflict and passion for a game.
If you belong to a bookclub I can see some great discussions come from this novel. The pressure we put on our children to be the best, drinking underage, rape, the roles of women vs men, parenting, the importance of sport in our communities, social and cultural prejudices, and homophobia are just a few areas for discussion.
I loved all the books so much that I decided to draw a map of the two fictional towns, Hed and Beartown and the forest that separates them in northern Sweden. This is how I imagined the map. to look like.
