New Flower (April 21, 2021) – Spring Flowers Under a Blanket of Snow

this snow literally came down overnight

Even for Southern Ontario in Canada, snow this late into April is not the norm. It’s ironic that we had so little snow this winter and Mother Nature decided make up for it well into spring. Four hours later all this snow has already disappeared.

Bright Square – April 18, 2021

….today would have been Mom’s 90th birthday

Thanks to Becky B for hosting Bright Square for the month of April.https://beckybofwinchester.com/2021/04/18/bright-square-18/

A few days ago I posted a photos of my narcissus plants that were about to open up. I called it Bright Future because they symbolized the ongoing beauty that I should experience every spring from here on and be reminded of my Dad who recently passed away.

Two of the flowers have opened and the rest are taking their time but we’ve had a few cold days and I’m sure when it starts to warm up again the rest will follow.

These New Bulbs Have a Bright Future in my Garden

….thanks to Becky B for hosting BrightSquare https://beckybofwinchester.com/2021/04/13/bright-square-13/

Last fall two close friends gifted me 50 narcissus bulbs to plant in my front yard. Liz came over and helped my plant the bulbs around the tree, the hydro pole, along the wall and in the flower bed. They started to emerge last February and are just about ready to bloom.

The flowers are a remembrance to my father who passed away last October. Hopefully they should pop up every spring. If they are anything like my daffodils this year they will probably multiply over the years.

A New Gnome to Brighten My Day

….I secretly love gnomes

Thanks to Becky B for hosting Bright Square. Every day this month we are encouraged to take square photos of anything bright. Here is my newest addition to my gnome collection and it is certainly the brightest one I have. I suspect after one summer in the sun it will fade like the others but that will just add to his character. https://beckybofwinchester.com/2021/04/04/bright-square-4/

December Came in Like a Lion

after those beautiful spring like days at the end of November

I love the first snow, especially when there’s a lot of it. The first snow this year was just a dusting for us back in mid November but the snowfall on December 1st was magical. Most of it has already melted but it was nice for the first two days. Here are a few shots from my garden.

These snow tires were installed the next day.

Last Bath of the Season

back in August I promised to post photos of the birds in the birdbath

On the weekend I decided that I needed to put the birdbath away for the winter. To be honest with you since I put it into my garden I hadn’t seen one bird use the thing. Well at least I hadn’t observed any action over there. I wondered if it was too close to where we sat.

Looking out the back door on Saturday I noticed that a bird landed on the edge of the bath. I quickly picked up my phone and gingerly made my way to the patio table. The bird took no notice of me but I didn’t want to chance it and scare him off so I stayed back and used my zoom feature on the phone. They’re not the best shots but I was pleased that the birdbath was a hit with this little fellow.

First Snow and Christmas Lights

….pulled out the lights and strung them on the outside tree

On the weekend we cleaned up the garden and put away the lawn furniture. We took out the snow shovel and snow blower and put the garden tools and rakes back in the garage. I also found the outdoor Christmas lights and dragged them out as well.

On Saturday our eldest daughter came over helped me put up the lights. This has to be the earliest I’ve ever put up the lights. I’m usually the one who gets to it a few days before Christmas. This year because of COVID we decided to try and make the Christmas season as cheerful as possible seeing that there will be no Santa Claus parade, shopping mostly on-line or curb side pick-up and no family gatherings.

We’re planning on a Zoom Christmas for now. In Toronto we’re in lockdown again for at least four weeks. To keep our spirits up we’re planning on decorating as normal, doing a cookie exchange and doing drop off deliveries of presents and goodies.

Our first snow was pretty slim down by the lake but other parts of Toronto and north of the city there was quite a bit of snow. Most of it has now melted but I’m sure there will be lots more to come in the next few months.

I’m glad we got the lights up when we did. It was probably the last nice day for awhile. Now that they’re up it helps boost my mood and I’m starting to pull out more decorations.
