29 Faces Challenge – Day 12

….struggling to get the proportions right

It’s late and I should really start these drawings earlier in the evening. I’m not sure why I don’t erase mistakes. Somewhere in my past I was told to never erase, just keep going but I think it’s time to find my kneadable eraser and start correcting things as I go.

Fantasy Collages

….grade 5s created these wonderful works of art, inspired by Dali

The assignment was to paint a simple watercolour landscape with a foreground, background and horizon line and then have fun cutting out pictures from magazines and newspapers and create a fantasy piece of art. The goal was to create a piece that told a story and hopefully some writing will accompany each piece of art in the near future.

Share Your World – Week 6

….this week’s questions definitely have an ‘Olympic’ theme….how fitting

Have you watched or plan to watch any of the 2014 Winter Olympics?

I haven’t watched any of the Olympics. I’ve listened to and watched the results on the news. My husband has no interest in these Olympics. The negative politics around the treatment of the gay community in Russia has put a damper on the Olympics for us. I’m glad that there haven’t been any ‘incidents’ and I’m hoping that there won’t be a terrorist attack while the games are on or for that matter, ever. I’m sure that I will sneak a peak at a few events that I love to watch.

What is your favorite winter Olympic event? Would you ever want to be an expert in that sport?

I love the luge and bobsled runs, all skiing events and speed skating. I don’t think that I could ever be an expert in any of these sports. High speeds scare me too much, especially going downhill.

Have you ever met an Olympic Athlete?

My husband’s cousin, Wendy Weibe, was in the summer Olympics in 1996, for rowing. This is one sport that I could be an expert in. About 10 years ago I took up rowing for two seasons. I loved it. I competed in both 8 man and 4 man boats.

Do you have a favorite athlete? Name sport.

I don’t really identify with athletes. I like some team sports but I’m not a huge fan for any one sport. Consequently I don’t really know the name of athletes. Now if some of our teams actually performed well I might become a fan. I do like soccer and if some of the high profile acquisitions actually work out I might find a favourite athlete.

What is your favorite exercise or sport? Is there a reason why?

My favourite team sport is volleyball because I used to play and now I coach (well I did). I also coach basketball, soccer and running. My personal favourite exercise is walking and running. I can’t wait for the weather to warm up a bit so that I can get back outside and at least walk. I also like cross country skiing but this winter has been too cold and driving to ski trails has been too treacherous. I’m also looking forward to getting back on my bike as soon as the snow melts.

 

100 Day Museum

29 Faces Challenge – Days 8, 9 and 10

….I’m getting a little behind with my ‘faces challenge’ so I’ve included 3 faces that I’ve done with my art classes

We’re having a lot of fun creating faces using paper collage. Each student is making 12 different  faces using different papers so there are very few that are finished and ready to display. As soon as they are I will post them here on this blog.

A Little Heaven in a Jar

….I don’t often make dessert but this recipe for cheesecake made in a slow cooker intrigued me

The original recipe comes from Chef Ricardo’s cookbook, Ricardo: Slow Cooker and was reprinted in the Life section of Saturday’s paper. I was drawn to the recipe for two reasons: 1. It is prepared in a slow cooker and 2. it is prepared in individual ramekins or small canning jars.

Since we were having the family over for Sunday lunch and Game Day, I decided to make the salad and dessert portions of the meal. The menu consisted of Orange, Avocado and Red Onion Salad, which I posted here, cornmeal and jalapeño muffins, beef enchiladas, Mexican rice and cheesecake in a jar.

Cheesecake with Strawberries and Graham Cracker Crumble in a Jar

Serves 4

1 pkg. (250g or 8 oz.) cream cheese, softened

75 mL (1/3 cup) sugar

1 egg

60 mL (1/4 cup) 35% cream

5 mL (1 tsp.) vanilla extract

Crumble

125 mL (1/2 cup) graham cracker crumbs

60 mL (1/4 cup) all-purpose flour

30 mL (2 tbsp) brown sugar

60 mL (1/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened

Fruit Topping

250 mL (1 cup) diced strawberries or favourite fruit

15 mL (1 tbsp.) sugar or sweetener

Whipped Cream (optional)

Directions:

1. Place a clean cloth in the bottom of the slow cooker. I forgot and two of the jars broke as soon as I added the hot water.

2. In a food processor combine all the ingredients for the cheesecake (not the crumble or fruit) and puree until smooth.

3. Pour into clean ramekins or small canning jars and place in the slow cooker. Carefully pour hot water (not boiling) around the jars until the water reaches the half way mark on the jars.

4. Cover and cook on low heat for 90 minutes until firm and slightly puffed. Remove from the slow cooker and let cool. photo 3-7Refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours until completely chilled.

5. Crumble:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

6. In a bowl combine the dry ingredients and add the butter. Using your hands mix the mixture until crumbly. Drop onto the baking sheet. Bake, stirring twice during the baking process for about 15 minutes or until golden in colour. Let cool. photo 4-7

Strawberries:

Wash the strawberries and dice. Toss with the sugar or sweetener of your choice. Set aside to macerate. photo 5-5

When ready to serve, garnish each ramekin or jar with the graham cracker crumble, strawberries and a dollop of whipped cream.
