How many languages do you you speak?

Basically I speak two languages, English and German. German was my first language and I understand it very well but I am very hesitant to use it. Growing up I had to go to German school on Saturdays and I hated it. Whenever my parents or their friends spoke to me in German I would answer in English. When I turned 18 I sang in a German choir and did so for 27 years.

What are some words that just make you smile?

The first word that makes me smile is my granddaughter’s name – Winnie. I can’t help but smile when I think of her or hear someone utter her name. Come to think of it all the names of my loved ones make me smile. Other words that make me smile are love, art, summer vacation, cottage, puppy and party.

If you were the original architect of one existing building, which building would you select?

This is tough because there are lots of buildings that I would be proud to put my name on, even ones that have been somewhat controversial. I love old and new but I think the one that stands out for me at the moment is the AGO. It is a combination of old and new. Several years ago it underwent a renovation and I simply love the lines and all the wood on the inside. The architect is Frank Gehry.

Would you rather have telepathy or telekinesis? (Telepathy is the communication using your brain waves, telekinesis is channeling the energy onto physical objects to cause substantial, observable physical changes.)

I think I’d rather have telepathy. It would be neat to be able to send messages without opening my mouth.

Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I’m grateful for being able to check off more items from my to do list. As you know June is extremely busy for me at school. Every time I’m able to cross off another item it takes a huge weight off my shoulders.

Things that are done:

2 retirement parties- collected money and bought gift for one

Jump Rope for Heart – money collected and prizes distributed

Report cards written, proofread and printed

Timetables for next year organized

Father’s Day gift bought and BBQ with the family

Year end school concert

Rehearsals for grade five farewell

book club for June

finished paintings with the students for the stage

son’s wedding via the internet

city finals for girls’ soccer

taking 78 students to Jays’ baseball game to sing the national anthems

This week I’m looking forward to the grade 5 farewell assembly, play day, cleaning up my office in the library, the staff party and making final arrangements for our trip to Italy. Most of all I’m looking forward to getting on that plane next Saturday. Phew! I’m tired just thinking about it.

Share Your World 2015 – Week 36

…..thanks for Cee for sharing your world with us this week

If you were a pen, what type, style and color would you be?

I would be a black fountain pen.

How many languages do you you speak?

I speak three languages, One well (English) and two poorly (German and French).

Are you a listener or talker?

I’m both. When I became a guidance counsellor I honed my listening skills but as a teacher I need to talk to get my point across. The other day someone commented that I was very quiet. Sometimes I just like to listen to what others have to say. Another time I was told I talked too much and that I should let others answer for themselves. I just can’t win.

Rather Have: Which would you rather have, 2 million dollars or true love?

Can’t I have both? I hate these questions. They say you can’t buy love so I guess I’d have to go with ‘true love’. All the money in the world wouldn’t make me happy if I couldn’t experience true love.

Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I’m grateful for a beautiful summer weekend. The weather, although hot, was glorious and the lake at the cottage was the best it’s been all summer. I would have loved to stay all week. Another argument for retiring now.

This week I’m looking forward to seeing all the children back at school and catching up with my colleagues. I’m also looking forward to finally getting the results of my husband’s biopsy (a little nervous as well).

Here are a few photos of my busy week. I didn’t take any new photos from the cottage but I did snap a shot at the farm where we stopped to pick up some fruit and vegetables for the weekend.

Share Your World – Week 3, 2014

I think the first question is the hardest

In what do you find the simplest of joys?

I guess one of the ways that I find the simplest of joys is baking or cooking for my family. I don’t do much of that anymore because my husband does most of the cooking.P1030326 I’m not complaining mind you, I love being pampered by him and he is a wonderful cook. I don’t bake much because I like my own cooking too much and I have a weakness for baked sweets.

Another way I find joy is to simply curl up with a good book and a cup of tea in the middle of the afternoon. I’m still working so I don’t often get time for that but in the summer I make up for it tenfold. P1010598

Jello or Pudding? And what is your favorite flavor?

It would definitely be pudding and my favourite flavour would be chocolate followed by coconut and banana.

Is there a language you would like to learn?

I’m terrible at languages. My first language is German and I’m sorry that I didn’t keep it up. I understand most of it and I can get by but I’d love to be more proficient. The other language that I wish I had worked harder at is French. I took French for about five years in school and I’ve taught in French Immersion schools for over twenty years but I discovered that you can’t learn a language by osmosis. Finally I think I would love to learn some Italian and maybe a little Spanish, just enough to get by when I travel to Italy and Spain (hopefully in the next two to three years).

Do you prefer juice or fruit?

This one is easy. Fruit all the way. A piece of fruit is much more satisfying and healthier than a glass of juice. P1000804
