Water, Water Everywhere – Beamer Falls

….thanks to Jez for hosting Water, Water Everywhere https://jezbraithwaite.blog/2021/04/26/reflections-2-water-water-everywhere-75/

Last week after we walked through Grimsby Beach Village we got back in the car and drove for a short distance up the Niagara Escarpment to the Beamer Memorial Conservation Area.

The trail from the parking lot led us to a section of the Bruce Trail which brought us to the edge of the escarpment. From there we had a great view of the town of Grimsby, the highway and Lake Ontario.

We continued hiking west to find the Beamer Waterfall. This area was similar to other parts of the Bruce Trail that we’ve been on. After awhile we could hear the falls but we had to literally walk out onto a road and go around the barriers to see it properly. Luckily the area was dry and we didn’t have to worry about slipping.

Another beautiful day for a hike and when we find a waterfall it’s alway a bonus.

Another trip to a conservation area with a waterfall.

Last week we took a drive to Halton Hills. We had to make a reservation and we were quite surprised at how many cars were in the parking lot for a Wednesday afternoon. The hike started with a steep climb up a rugged path but this was the most difficult part of the hike. After that the paths were wide and relatively smooth.

It didn’t take too long before we heard the sound of rushing water.

As the sound got louder the we noticed that the water moved quickly and before too long we found ourselves at the top of Hilton Falls. This waterfall is 10 metres high and at the base are the ruins of a 19th century sawmill.

The conservation area also has great picnic sites right by the falls and when COVID is over the fire pit will probably be open to the public again.

After our lunch we headed back on the path that we came on but there was a fork in the road and we headed toward the reservoir.

All in all we had a wonderful day. On the way home we took a side road instead of the highway and were impressed with the beautiful countryside so close to the city.

Writer’s Quotes Wednesday – Leisure Time

“Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the brightest gems in a useful life.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

I love this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson. During COVID so many of us have had more time on our hands because commuting was no longer necessary to get to and from work because we were able to work from home but how many of you made use of that extra hour or two to do something for yourself. I’m painfully aware of this after I spend too much of my day binge watching TV.

One of the best things that my husband and I have done since January is to put aside one day a week, in the middle of the week, get into the car and drive somewhere where we can be in nature and go for long hikes and not worry about crowds of people. We’ve had a wonderful time and each week we become a little more organized. This week we even packed a picnic lunch and some weeks we had dinner cooking in the slow cooker so that when we got home dinner was ready.

Here are some of the wonderful places we have visited since January. These are our ‘brightest gems’ in our lives this year.

Water, Water Everywhere – Tiffany Falls

….thanks to Jez for hosting Water, Water Everywhere https://jezbraithwaite.blog/2021/03/01/reflections-in-a-puddle-water-water-everywhere-67/

For this week’s #67 challenge I have photos of Tiffany Falls to share with you. Earlier this week my husband and I had quite the adventure getting to this beautiful waterfall in Ancaster, ON.

Ancaster is just south of Hamilton and Tiffany Falls is just one of over 100 waterfalls in the area. Two weeks ago this waterfall was completely frozen. You could actually walk behind the frozen wall of ice. Since then a lot of the snow has melted but in the wooded areas the snow melted and froze again so the trails were very icy. Before we started out my husband lent me his ice cleats but that meant he didn’t have anything on the bottom of his shoes.

There were parts of the path, especially when it went uphill that were so slippery I didn’t even trust the cleats. At one point a nice gentleman who also had cleats on his shoes helped me over a rise on the path. Unfortunately it was at this point that my husband stopped and didn’t try to get closer to the falls. Luckily he was able to see it from where he stopped and his camera allowed him to zoom in and get a closer look. I walked all the way to the lookout. In some of the photos you’ll notice that there is a family that went right to the base of the falls.

When we got home I immediately ordered a second pair of ice cleats.

Waterfalls in Hamilton – Water, Water Everywhere #65

….thanks to Jez for hosting Water, Water Everywhere https://jezbraithwaite.blog/2021/02/22/snowy-branches-water-water-everywhere-65/

Yesterday Kevin and I drove to Hamilton, ON, to hike around an area known for its waterfalls. Unfortunately it was very icy so the hiking part was cut short but not before we were able to see two of the area’s famous waterfalls. The first one is Webster’s Falls. It is probably the more spectacular of the two because it is bigger and more water falls over the edge of the cliffs. Tews Falls has less water but the view along the gorge is spectacular.

Webster’s Falls

According to the City of Waterfalls site Webster’s Falls is a curtain waterfall with a 22 metre plunge and is found in the Spencer Gorge/Webster’s Falls Conservation Area in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The water flows down Spencer Creek and the falls is the largest in the area.

Tews Falls

Tews Falls is a 41 metre ribbon waterfall, and is the tallest waterfall found in Hamilton. Located at the Spencer Gorge / Webster’s Falls Conservation Area, its source is Logie’s Creek.
