Drawing figures from pieces of collage randomly glued onto the page
After reading the book The Dictionary of Lost Words I was inspired to create a double spread of collage and sketches that highlight some of the themes from Pip Williams’ book. The novel covers the making of the Oxford dictionary, protests by the suffragettes, World War 1, women as second class citizens, birth, death and romance.
Elisabeth Bailey’s outlook on life changed when a friend gifted her a pot of violets into which she placed a wild snail. She was suffering from a mysterious disease which left her bedridden and separated from her from the natural world. This tiny creature helped her reconnect with life and she slowly started to heal.
This is one of my prep pages that I showed a few days ago. I first added some more colour and marks with watercolour and I used my Micron Pens and Sharpies to draw in a face and flowers.
My art journey has included signing up for a new on-line art class, a trip to the art gallery, speaking to other artists and learning something new from them.
I have wanted to put some of my photography into gallery shows. When I went to WAAC to pick up my artwork I met a photographer who kindly gave me some advice and kindly critiqued the photos I was thinking of displaying at the next photography show. She suggested that I darken the background using the black point on my camera. I never knew what that feature did but now that I do I can see using it again. She also reminded me how to erase bits in the photo that I didn’t want.
When I got home I got busy and refined a few photos and ordered large prints from a professional printing firm. Here are two that I’ve ordered.
Today I did the first assignment of my online course and prepped the first six pages for tomorrow’s class.
The artist that I’m taking the course with is Christina Romeo. It is called Mixed-media Fantasy Illustrations and is found on Carla Sonheim’s site. http://carlasonheim.com
Several years ago I took a Lino block printing class. I carved out branches on the block and made a few prints but I never did anything with the prints until today.
I glued the print into my journal and added more collage papers and Inchies. This evening I extended the branches with my markers and added black, white and gold lines and marks.
I’ve done blind contour drawings before. They are suppose to be a good way to warm up when you want to sketch an object. I took photos of the objects so that you can see what I was trying to draw blind and then semi-blind. After the warm-up I drew the object and then added watercolour.
