…..it’s no secret I love texture
Nature has an abundance of beautiful textures. Here are a few of my favourite subjects to photograph because of their textural surfaces.

…just signed up for a 10 week pottery class
Four weeks ago one of our teachers went on maternity leave and a new teacher, DH took over her 1/2 class. I liked her immediately and soon discovered that before becoming a teacher she was a potter. She told me she still taught pottery classes from her studio in her home and that a new session was starting mid April.
Tonight was the first class and despite the forecast for round two of more bad weather I decided to chance the drive and make the commitment to 10 weeks of classes. I loved the easy going atmosphere of the class. There were only two of us there tonight so I got a lot of personal guidance and attention. I don’t have a lot of experience with clay and DH gave me a lot of good advice and hands on experience with this new medium.
DH’s other student has been taking classes for 5 years and was working on a teapot. It was interesting watching her make and assemble the spout and handle for her pot. I really liked the texture that she had carved into her pot.
DH gave me a demonstration on the potter’s wheel. It’s like magic watching the ball of clay transform into a vase.
Tonight I made two pinch pots and then combined them to create one vessel. Next week I will be cutting a lid from the top of the pot and carving a design into the clay. I know it doesn’t look like much now but I have great hopes for it. I’m also working on a texture plate for future projects.
I’ve included a couple of photos of DH’s finished teapots. I don’t think I’ll be making teapots in this session but I can see a couple of bowls and some mugs in the near future. Stay tuned.

Oh, by the way, the next round of freezing rain held off until I got home tonight.
….. this started out as a filler for students who had finished their last project
The last major project that I assigned most of my classes was a one point perspective landscape. It was very detailed and has taken some students three classes to complete. As is often the case there are always students who finish well ahead of their classmates and look to me for the next project. I found a great project that I felt reinforced and extended some of the elements of design that we’ve been learning about and allowed them to dabble in both watercolour and acrylic paints. It’s been so popular that most of my students wanted to make a ‘doodle painting’. Here are a few of the finished pieces done by my grade three students.
….. remember the large sheets of texture rubbings and paintings we did in my grade 2/3 class?
Well last week we took those sheets and designed and cut out Canadian woodland animals and birds and then placed them all together on a large background to create a wilderness mural. We included trees, grasses, flowers, a pond, rocks and logs. The children had a wonderful time putting it all together and were very excited to display it in the hallway outside their classroom. We need to add a few more finishing touches but I was also very excited about sharing it with you and couldn’t wait.
….looking for examples for my next art lesson
Today on our walk with Frances I was on the lookout for interesting examples of texture that I can share with my students back at school. Texture is all around us, from the rough texture of bark and the thorny, prickly texture of burrs to the soft texture of grasses and seed heads and the smooth texture of leaves.
