….where was I and would I have preferred to be somewhere else?
That is the question posed by the Daily Post today. First of all I have to admit that I have not been out for New Year’s celebrations for several years, preferring to stay at home and watch the ball drop from the comfort of my living room.
This New Year’s Eve I definitely would have preferred to be somewhere else. I wasn’t at home cuddled up on the couch. I was sitting in a dark waiting room at the hospital with my husband, watching a preselected channel on the television. At least it was the coverage of Times Square and the view from the room allowed us to see some of the fireworks that went off at the stroke of midnight.
For the last three days, I’ve been back and forth to the hospital waiting for our adult son to be wheeled down to surgery to repair a broken arm. It finally happened at 8:45 last night. The surgery was successful and at 1:15 when he was returned to his hospital room he was wide awake and chatty. Once I was assured that he was comfortable and had everything he needed at his fingertips I said my goodbyes and made my way home.
Definitely an unforgettable New Year’s Eve but one I’d prefer not to repeat.
Happy 2016 to the blogging world. Wishing everyone good health, happiness and peace in the world.
Carol
Glad the story has a happy ending.

Me too. He’s home now but I think he’s going to be a very demanding patient. The nurses loved him because he was so cooperative but it’s different when the nurse is Mom.

Dear Carol, so glad everything is well with you and your son. I was worried with you since I saw your IG photo from the hospital. I wish a fast recover for him and wonderful new year to you and your family.

Thanks Elizabeth. I’m wishing for a fast recovery as well. I couldn’t wait for him to get here for the holidays but I never envisioned that it would turn out this way.

Definitely not a good way to end the year, I hope all is well now. Wishing you good health and happiness in the New Year.

Thanks. It’s been quite the year. Between my husband and now our son I have spent way too much time at the hospital this year. I hope this is it for awhile. Fingers crossed.

He waited 3 days to have surgery on a broken arm?!!
As a parent, I can’t think of anything more stressful than having something wrong in our child’s world … regardless of how old they are. Hospitals and surgeries rank at the top.
That was a very difficult way to start a new year.
I hope all is well now and recovery is swift!

At least he had a comfortable bed and after the first night the nurses took pity on him and gave him a private room for the last three days he was there. I hope his recovery is swift as well. He’s already home and I don’t think he realized how difficult it would be just doing normal things, like getting dressed.

Thank you Judith. I think it will be a good year. When we get over this set back I have to believe that it’s going to be a great year. We have two weddings in the planning stages that are suppose to happen in the next 6 months. I’m looking forward to both of them.

So glad to hear that the operation finally went ahead and was a success. At least your son can walk around. My son couldn’t manage the stairs very well with his full leg cast so I was up and down them like a yo-yo! I think I know some of what you’re going through so I wish your son a speedy recovery, for both your sakes. 😀

Thank you Sarah. I don’t think sons really appreciate what mothers go through when they are ill or injured. It’s been a difficult day. I hope things get better in a hurry. Maybe going back to work on Monday is a blessing in disguise. It means that my husband will have to cater to my son’s needs for a few hours a day.

No, you’re right, I don’t think sons know what mothers go through. But that’s probably a blessing because we wouldn’t want to add to their suffering. I’m glad to hear you’ll get some time off at work. 😉 My son’s recovery seemed to take forever so you may need to think about how to take more opportunities for a break so that any friction doesn’t get a chance to build up.
My best wishes to you all.

Happy 2016! Now that the low point has been set, it’s for things to get good, then better. Al the necessary stages along the way to a Great Year.

Certainly a different way to bring in New Year, but not one many would want to copy. Hope the rest of 2016 goes much better for you and yours. Keep yourself focussed on those two weddings – definitely something to look forward to.

Thanks Dorothy. I need to remind myself that this is a difficult time for my son as well and that I shouldn’t take what he says too personally. I’ll start focussing on wedding #1 which takes place in 6 short weeks.

Thank you Patty. I know that hospital all too well. I hope I don’t have to set foot in there for a very long time.

I was sorry to hear what happened. Well, one surgery is still ok as long as it’s successful. I remember, I was going to surgeries after an accident like to work, every 2 weeks. Young people recover better, too. I wish you all good health and recovery from physical and mental traumas, and hopefully the year turns out to be a good one. Happy New Year!

Thank you Inese for your kind wishes. The surgery went well and our son goes to see the surgeon tomorrow to make sure everything is going as it should. He leaves for London next Monday so I hope there are no complications.

I can relate because I have two grown sons and I do remember the broken arms, knees and so on and so on. But they are so worth all we go through and the joy they bring is beyond words.
Thank you for liking my blog “Circle Dates.” Get some rest 🙂

I know that the moment he leaves I’ll miss him all over again but I am tired and was hoping to get to bed early tonight. He is finally feeling better and went out tonight to spend some time with a friend but I don’t think he has a key for the house. What to do?
