Walking Through Clissold Park and Along Church Street to Get Ice-cream

Yesterday was a more laid back day but at one point Azadeh, Sevin and I needed to get out for a walk. It turned out to be one of those typical London days ….to rain or not to rain but we chanced it anyway and headed for the park.

We took a shortcut through the park and made our way to Church Street. About half the stores were closed because it was a bank holiday but most of the coffee shops were opened.

The best part of the walk for Sevin was the stop at the gelato shop.

…and buying her favourite flavours….mango and strawberry.

  1. Although I am now living in Switzerland since 58 years,, I grew up in Bethanal Green, now Tower Hamlets, so I find your writings about London very interesting. Eventually our houses were pulled down, slum clearance, and my family moved to Dagenham. My playgrounds were mainly the bombed ruins in my area from the war.

I moved to Switzerland as I wanted to see something of Europe and found work in Zürich. Eventually married a Swiss. Of course I remember Clissold Park, although Victoria Park was more in my area. I went to school in London, Spital Square. I am a 100% Londoner, actually a cockney, although now speak mainly Swiss German at hone.

    • Hi Pat, thank you for that lovely reply. We are staying in a flat in Highbury Quadrant where our son lives. The area is celebrating 70 years and we just came back from a community meeting where a guest speaker spoke about the history of the area and the LLC. She mentioned how after the war slums and bombed areas were torn down and rebuilt with council flats. It was very interesting.
I have followed you for a long time and knew some of your past. Thank you for sharing more details. I’m in London for three more weeks.

  2. I remember Highbury as being the home of Arsenal football club. I was quite a football fan, although my club was West Ham United. I remember the London County Council, LCC, and all our books at promariy school seemed to have their Logo on them. I used to visit London annually to see my dad. Since he passed away and am no longer so mobile (MS) I have not been in London since 2016.
