Thursday Trio – Sept. 14, 2023

To Bury the Truth

A trio of paintings with a somber message. These pieces were done by an indigenous artist, Amber Smith Quail that I have had the privilege to get to know this past year. They are part of her show at WAAC called Nawemaa / to be related.

If you have any trios you’d like to share, serious or funny, please copy my link and post it into your post. I’ll get a pingback and will be sure to check it out.

  2. I didn’t read the title and looked at the three pictogramms. Mhm ..At the moment, I am teaching the “orientation” part in my German class, what the students like to call the “political” part. One subpart is about German history. Just this moment I’ve been teaching about the end of World War II and the consequences of the war and national socialism. When Germany lay in ruin, it was the women who cleared away the rubble. We have a word for these women: Trümmerfrauen (literally: debris women or rubble women). I thought your photo showed something similar: women getting the work done. Which they do in the artist’s meaning as well, I guess.
    Mine is very lighthearted: https://picturesimperfectblog.wordpress.com/2023/09/14/enjoying-the-seaside/

    • Hi Elke, in this scenario the woman is actually a priest and refers to the horrors that happened at residential schools here in Canada. Many indigenous children were scooped up from their parents and sent to these schools that were run by the nuns and priests. They tried to take the ‘Indian’ out of them. They were forced to learn English, dress like white children and had their braids cut off. Many of these children died while at these schools and the parents were never told about it. Years later graves of these poor children were discovered at many of these schools. Most Canadians were shocked to learn that this was happening in our own country and we had no idea.
