….a challenging game to be sure
Since I’ve retired my neighbours have wanted me to learn how to play bridge. To be honest with you I never even considered the possibility of playing this game. I always thought it was too serious a game and it didn’t look like a lot of fun to me. I’m quickly learning that the fun is in the challenge.
I signed up for a bridge class (Absolute Beginners) in September and for 2 1/2 hours every Monday I’ve been struggling to keep up with this game. So much to remember. I am definitely a hands on learner but I am coming away with a new rule or two every time I attend a class.
Luckily for me my neighbours have offered to let me join them for some bridge parties where I mostly watch to learn but they’ve also very kindly let me play some hands. The more I play I better I understand the game. I’m beginning to think that I could get into this game and I’ve signed up for the next level which starts in January.
Are there any other bridge players out there that can give me some tips for learning the bidding rules. Maybe you can suggest a good cheat sheet that you’ve found helpful.

That sounds like fun. I’ve recently started play darts and I am in a league too, so I understand the joy of learning a new game and having people who enjoy the game with you. I know its a slow process must I find the journey is as enjoyable as the destination.

I’ve enjoyed meeting new people who are also trying to learn the game. I’m very bad at doing the homework but in my defence the instructor was sending my work to the wrong address. Now that I’m getting it I usually wait till the last minute to do it, just like when I went to school as a student. Some things never change.

I too was invited to join a group of women to play Bridge on a weekly basis. Although I know absolutely nothing about the game, they felt I would pick it up quickly … but I declined. Inevitably you get that one person in the group who takes the game much too seriously – and I thought there was a good chance that person would be me 😉
Good luck with your lessons. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to take lessons and it’s a brilliant idea!

I think taking lessons is critical in this game. There are too many rules that people ignore and you can easily get into some bad habits. If it ever becomes too serious for me I’ll have to reconsider how often and whom I play with. Life’s too short to take a game TOO seriously.
