My parents had a gardenful of these. They are exquisite. (Some are quite poisonous too.)

Yikes, I had no idea that some were poisonous! I’ll have to look into that before I decide to plant them in my garden. My daughter’s dog eats all kinds of vegetation.

Some years ago there was a drought in China and all the bees went up into the mountains and collected all the nectar from one particular Rhododendron and made honey. Apparently some hundreds died. I heard the story from a tour guide in the Kew gardens in London years ago.

I had to look this up. I didn’t find the story about the drought in China but there was a lot about Mad Honey produced in Turkey. Luckily there are no cases of this type of honey from rhododendrons being produced in North America or most parts of Europe. One article even went as far as to call it a weapon of war. Very Interesting.
