At least at Christmas we have poinsettias and holly. It helps.

Our holly tree in the garden is a mass of berries at present — don’t remember it ever having so many. But by Christmas the birds will have stripped it bare. As for poinsettias — by the time we buy them in the shops they tend to be faded, floppy and suffer from leaf drop. One year when we were in Portugal’s Algarve in November I was overjoyed by all the poinsettias growing around the place. Large bushes covered in vibrant red bracts were very different to the sad pot plants we can buy.
