Mystery of the Fallen Bird Feeder

….the hummingbird feeders are often empty after I’ve been away for a few days but I’ve never seen them on the ground

When we arrived at the cottage last weekend I found one of the hummingbird feeders lying on the forest floor and of course it was empty. In fact all the feeders were empty but the rest of them were still hanging where I left them.

I quickly filled all the feeders and rehung the fallen feeder. It wasn’t long before I discovered what caused the feeder to fall. I think the following photos are pretty self explanatory. Enjoy!

  4. Ah, a squirrel. In most parts of Scotland we still have native red squirrels, but greys have been making inroads from south of the border. Forestry Commission Scotland has been exerting itself, using all manner of inventive measures to stop the spread of the greys which are larger than the reds and tend to wipe them out. I think the greys carry some disease which is fatal to the reds. The Botanic Garden in Edinburgh where the greys ran around freely, and where bags of nuts to feed them could be bought, have clamped down, and the greys have disappeared in an effort to protect our native wildlife and biodiversity.

    • The red squirrels are more common in cottage country but my friend has them in her garden here in Toronto. We only have the grey ones where we live. I like the red ones we have up north. They definitely have more personality. Whenever I chased this little one from the feeder he would sit on an upper branch and scold me.
