Share Your World – Week 4, 2014

,,,,some interesting questions this week….had to think about some of them

Do you recharge your energy by going out with friends for a good time or by spending with quiet time alone? For a person who likes company and likes to ‘party’ you might find it surprising that I enjoy quiet time alone to re-energize. Going out tends to zap my energy. Staying home and reading a good book, painting or writing gives me a sense of accomplishment and that for me is energizing.P1020957

What is the most number of blankets you’ve ever had on your bed? I don’t like heavy blankets on the bed at night. I much prefer one cozy down comforter to keep me warm. I think the most number of blankets at any one time would be three but just the thought of that makes me uncomfortable.

You are invited to a party that will be attended by many fascinating people you never met. Would you attend this party if you were to go by yourself? I’m not sure I would go, especially by myself. If a friend wanted to go I might consider it. After all it might be fun meeting some of these people. My one concern would be that the evening could be a bust and then what would I do. If I went with a friend we could at least salvage the evening and go for a drink together and enjoy each other’s company.

Do you like talking to people on the phone? Or do you prefer voice mail or email? As much as I like the convenience of emails, I prefer to talk to people on the phone. An email and a one sided voice mail can be misinterpreted as to the person’s meaning or intent. Did that message have an angry tone to it?… is he joking? ….should I be concerned? On the phone you can address the person directly and probably hear in their voice how they’re feeling or what the intent of a statement meant and if you can’t you can ask them right away.

Share Your World – Week 3, 2014

I think the first question is the hardest

In what do you find the simplest of joys?

I guess one of the ways that I find the simplest of joys is baking or cooking for my family. I don’t do much of that anymore because my husband does most of the cooking.P1030326 I’m not complaining mind you, I love being pampered by him and he is a wonderful cook. I don’t bake much because I like my own cooking too much and I have a weakness for baked sweets.

Another way I find joy is to simply curl up with a good book and a cup of tea in the middle of the afternoon. I’m still working so I don’t often get time for that but in the summer I make up for it tenfold. P1010598

Jello or Pudding? And what is your favorite flavor?

It would definitely be pudding and my favourite flavour would be chocolate followed by coconut and banana.

Is there a language you would like to learn?

I’m terrible at languages. My first language is German and I’m sorry that I didn’t keep it up. I understand most of it and I can get by but I’d love to be more proficient. The other language that I wish I had worked harder at is French. I took French for about five years in school and I’ve taught in French Immersion schools for over twenty years but I discovered that you can’t learn a language by osmosis. Finally I think I would love to learn some Italian and maybe a little Spanish, just enough to get by when I travel to Italy and Spain (hopefully in the next two to three years).

Do you prefer juice or fruit?

This one is easy. Fruit all the way. A piece of fruit is much more satisfying and healthier than a glass of juice. P1000804

Share Your World – Week 2, 2014

…. here are the next four questions

If you had to move to a country besides the one you currently live in, where would you move and why?

I think I would move to the Netherlands. It’s where my son lives at the moment. If I had to leave Canada and most of my family behind I think it would be somewhat comforting to have one of my children close by. We had an opportunity to visit Amsterdam and Rotterdam several years ago when our son was studying there. We loved it. Even though we don’t speak Dutch most of the people there are very fluent in English. I also like the fact that we are only a hop, skip and jump from Ireland and Germany where both my husband and I have extended family.

Music or silence while working?

It depends what I’m doing. Some days when I’m doing chores I like loud catchy music but other times I prefer the quiet, especially late at night. I’m a bit of a night owl and sometime I do my best work after midnight. My husband and son both like loud music when they’re cooking.

What is your favorite color?

My favourite colour has always been red. I love bright bold colours. Next in line would be a dark rich blue.

Do you have a bucket list? What are your three items? A bucket list are things you want to do before you die.

I’ve never really believed in a bucket list. Maybe the thought of dying puts me off. What if I do everything on the list long before I’m ready to die. I think that I would jinx myself. Instead I prefer to make long range plans for one or two years ahead. What I really like is spontaneity. Just get up and go. The things that I would like to do in the next year or so are:

1. Go to Europe again, either Italy, Germany or Turkey (or maybe all three).

2. Take a trip out west to visit my baby sister (going in March).

3. Do a wine tour in Prince Edward County with my husband this spring or summer.

Share Your World – Week 47

….a new challenge for me

Share Your World-Wk-47

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

I probably do everything but what I need to do. Here is a list of things I like to do:

Write a post or two for my blog, read a good book, watch a marathon of TV shows that I’ve missed or catch up on a series that’s new to me but is about to go into its second or third season, clean out the refrigerator or organize one or two kitchen cupboards (not my most favourite activity but gives me a lot of satisfaction when it’s done) and do something creative, like paint, knit or sew (something I don’t do often enough)

What is the weirdest or strangest thing you saw or heard or did this week?

It’s been a really a really busy week with family so nothing weird or strange stands out.

I’m appalled that after 10 days there are still 200 families without power in the city of Toronto because of last weeks ice storm. I think the weird part of this whole story is that the mayor didn’t think it was necessary to declare a state of emergency when 300 000 customers went without power and thousands sat in the dark and cold for days, not hours, DAYS.

What item, that you don’t have already, would you most like to own?

I would like to have (maybe not own) a housekeeper and a handyman to help me around the house. I tend to let things go until I know company is coming and then I’m a mad woman trying to get everything done before people arrive or I stay up late like I did last night pulling things off shelves and washing down everything. I would love to have a handyman to do the little things that my husband promises to do and then never gets to, especially things electrical and plumbing related.

How many times you have moved in the last ten years?

Homes – zero times. I’ve lived in the same house for over 35 years.

Work – zero times. I’ve been at the same school for over 14 years but I have moved classrooms in the last two years and that is a huge job, especially when you’ve accumulated 12 years of stuff for one grade. When I moved to the library I couldn’t give a lot of my stuff away because people just didn’t have room and I didn’t have space to store it. The teacher in my old room has kindly allowed to keep a lot of my ‘stuff’ in one of the cupboards and slowly I’m removing things as I find new owners or a use for it myself.
